JESTA: Japan's Travel Authorisation (What to Know)

You may have seen headlines about "JESTA," Japan's version of an electronic travel authorisation — the kind of pre-trip permission already used by the United States (ESTA) and others. It's coming, but not yet. A law was passed in 2026 to create it, and the system is scheduled to launch no later than March 2029. For anyone travelling in 2026 or 2027, the short version is simple: JESTA is not required, and you carry on travelling visa-free as before.

What JESTA is

JESTA is a planned electronic travel authorisation: an online pre-screening that eligible visa-free travellers will need to obtain before boarding a flight to Japan. The aim is to vet arrivals in advance — similar in concept to systems run by other countries — rather than relying solely on checks at the border. It is not a visa, and it's separate from the arrival paperwork you do on the day.

The timeline (and why it doesn't affect 2026 travel)

This is the part that causes confusion, so to be clear:

MilestoneWhen
Law passed to create JESTAMay 2026
System launchesNo later than March 2029
Required for travel in 2026?No
Required for travel in 2027?No

Until JESTA goes live, eligible visitors continue to enter Japan visa-free. The legislation in 2026 set the framework; the actual application system simply doesn't exist for travellers yet.

Because JESTA isn't operational, there is no official site to apply and no fee to pay right now. Be wary of any service claiming to sell you a "Japan JESTA" or "Japan ETA" for a 2026 or 2027 trip — that authorisation can't be issued yet.

What it's expected to cost

When it launches, JESTA is expected to carry a fee of roughly ¥2,000–3,000 per traveller. [VERIFY: final fee and exact requirements will be confirmed by the Japanese government closer to the launch.] Details such as eligibility, validity period and the application process are still to be finalised.

What to do in the meantime

For trips in 2026 and 2027, nothing about JESTA changes your plans. Your two steps are unchanged:

  • Travel visa-free if your nationality qualifies — the existing visa-free rules still apply for many countries.
  • Use Visit Japan Web to pre-register your immigration and customs details and generate QR codes for a faster airport arrival. See our Visit Japan Web guide.

FAQ

Do I need JESTA to visit Japan in 2026? No. JESTA does not launch until no later than March 2029. For 2026 and 2027, eligible travellers enter visa-free and use Visit Japan Web.

Is JESTA the same as Visit Japan Web? No. Visit Japan Web is a free service for your arrival paperwork (immigration and customs) and is available now. JESTA is a future pre-travel authorisation that doesn't exist for travellers yet.

How much will JESTA cost? It's expected to be around ¥2,000–3,000 per person, but the final fee and rules will be confirmed before launch.

Where do I apply for JESTA? You can't yet — there is no live application system. When it launches, apply only through the official Japanese government channel, never a third-party reseller.
