Osaka TemmanguMap

One of the most well-known Tenjin shrines among many built throughout Japan was found by Murakmi Emperor to provide Sugawarano Michizane's spirits comfort in 949. Saruta-no-mikoto and others are enshrined besides the primary deity, Michizane. The shrine as well as the gate had to be reconstructed for several times due to fires, and the current form was erected in 1845. Osaka Tenmangu is host to one of the three biggest festivals of Japan, Tenjin Matsuri, which is held every July and attracts a great number of tourists and locals. The festival offers a parade of boats going down the river and 14 dolls as its main features. The dolls are believed to be made in about 1690 and are preserved by Osaka Prefecture as important materials.

Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping StreetMap

Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street is a roofed shopping arcade, which grew out of the “Tenman vegetable market” held at the Osaka Tenmangu Shrine during the Edo Period and the market is known to have played an important role in Japan's logistics area at that time. The shopping street running from the north to the south between Tenjinbashi 1 chome and 9 chome is now as long as 2.6 km and boasts the longest shopping street it in Japan. In the roofed arcade, the shopping street is crowdedly filled with some 600 stores selling all kinds of goods including clothes, snacks, used books, and etc. on either side. By the end of 1997, the arcade was restored to change the image of the shopping street; however, the stores retain the same appearance as before. The place becomes crowded with visitors when there's a summer festival held at the Osaka Tenmangu in August.

Tsuyu-tenjinsha (Ohatsu-tenjin Shrine)Map: 3C

Built more than 1100 years ago, the shrine has been appreciated by many locals. The original name of the shrine, Tsuyu-tenjinsha is said to be derived from a word, "tsuyu" (dew) used to describe tears in the poem written by Sugawarano Michizane. In 1703, young lovers who were not destined to be together took their own lives in the shrine's forest. The tragedy inspired Chikamatsu Monzaemon to dramatize the incident and to write the famous love story, "Sonezaki Shinju." The pureness of love moved audiences to tears and the play became a sensation. The main character, Ohatsu especially left a vivid impression to many, and the shrine began to be commonly called "Ohatsu-Tenjinsha" eventually. Ever since then, the shrine has been known as the god of love and brought many praying for a good match.
