| Inujima Art Project Seirensho |
 |
The Inujima Art Project 'Seirensho', or 'refinery' is the brainchild of
Soichiro Fukutake who sought to create a museum that would
minimally impact the environment. His collaboration with ecoconscious
architect, Hiroshi Sambuichi and conceptual artist,
Yukinori Yanagi has produced a unique structure that not only
maintains the industrial heritage of this refinery, but also serves as
a model for a recycling oriented society while showcasing Yanagi's
life work which includes a motif of famed writer, Yukio Mishima.
Built in 1909, the Inujima Seirensho copper refinery played an essential role in the development
of the Japanese economy as copper was one of Japan's main exports during the Edo
period. After it closed, it became a special part of the industrial landscape being comprised
of Karami brick (a by-product of copper refining), Inujima granite, the smokestack and
other materials. It was architect Sambuichi's vision to blend these original features into an
eco-friendly structure. He used solar, geothermal and weather-based natural energy, as
well as the geological landscape to achieve his goal.

The result is a curious blend of the
traditional and modern, industrial and environmentally conscious.
For the Art Project, artist Yukinori Yanagi created one work of art that is exhibited in five
different areas. From the time visitors enter the museum
until they leave the exhibit, they will enter a single spatial
experience. As part of his life work, Yanagi adds a new
dimension to his art by utilizing a design process where
the viewer's frame of mind is transformed during their
time in the museum.
Visitors to the Inujima Art Project Seirensho must reserve
their guided tour in advance as space is limited.
