Heike Village built in 1985 to
commemorate the 800th
anniversary of the Taira-
Minamoto War. Private houses
and traditional utensils preserve
the lifestyle of the defeated,
fugitive Heike Clan.

The hot spring was likely
discovered by fleeing Heike Clan
samurai some 800 years ago
following their defeat by the Genji
Clan. Yunishigawa Onsen yet
echoes legends of the fugitive
warriors and historic vestiges and
reminiscences of their hidden
lifestyle abound everywhere.

The hot spring resort along the
Houkigawa River Valley owns a
long history dating to its discovered
in 806. Named "Shiobara Jyu-itto"
because of its existing 11 hot
springs, each spa is endowed
with particular mineral water composition.
Numerous clean, modern hotels are
found here but this area retains a
traditional aura exclusive to spas. This
region is known nationwide for its scenic
beauty particularly impressive in seasons
of lush spring greenery and glorious
autumn foliage. Enjoy an invigorating
walk along the hiking
trail bordering the
scenic river in Shiobara Valley particularly
during spring amidst lush, shining greenery.

The Peony Flower Festival is held every
May at Myounji Temple in Nasu-Shiobara
City with in excess of 2000 peony clusters
simultaneously blooming in a variety of
colors. The temple grounds are awash in a
dazzling sea of gorgeous peonies. |
