JR EAST PASS - UNLIMITED USE OF SHINKANSEN IN EASTERN JAPAN! -
JR EAST PASS allows the traveler trouble-free movement around East Japan, whereas JAPAN RAIL PASS covers nationwide travel. Summer weather is relatively cool in Eastern Japan; use this convenient pass to explore while escaping the heat and humidity elsewhere.
Exceptional Features of JR EAST PASS

A. May be purchased upon arrival in Japan with Temporary Visitor entry status.
B. Special pass: Flexible 4-day pass available for use any 4 days within one month of issue date.
C. Favored tourist destinations such as Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura and Nikko World Heritage Site are covered by your JR EAST PASS.
 Validity Coverage

The Pass is valid on all JR EAST: Limited Express Trains (with the exception of private compartments or berths) including 5 'Shinkansen' (Bullet trains) serving Tohoku, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu and Nagano; Express trains (except berths, etc.); local trains (except "Liner"/ "Home Liner")
JR East Pass Coverage Area

*Tobu Line (Nikko, Kinugawa), Izu Kyuko (Odoriko, Super View Odoriko) and Hokutetsu (Hakutaka) perhaps may be covered with a JR EAST PASS by summer 08. Check for up-date information at
JR East website.

Note:
Some JR EAST-line trains also use other company's rail lines, therefore, passengers using these trains must pay fares and charges calculated on the distance traveled including
- "Hakutaka" (Hokuetsu Kyuko between Echigo-Yuzawa and Naoetsu)
- "Odoriko" and "Super-View Odoriko" (Izu Kyuko between Ito and Izukyu-Shimoda)
- "Nikko", "Kinugawa" and "Spacia Kinugawa" (Tobu Line between Kurihashi and Tobu-nikko or Shin-fujiwara).

Please note:
JR EAST PASS is not valid for the 'Tokaido Shinkansen' and the 'Sanyo Shinkansen' lines connecting Tokyo and cities west as Kyoto, Osaka or Fukuoka.
 JR EAST PASS -Eligibility Requirements-

1.
Only foreign tourists visiting Japan from abroad defined by the entry "Temporary Visitor*" are eligible.
2.
To purchase Pass inside Japan your passport must show a "Temporary Visitor" entry stamp, plus return air ticket at the time of purchase. The Pass is not available unless above conditions are met.
3.
Your return air ticket is necessary to purchase a JR EAST PASS as it is sold only on the condition of "one PASS per person per visit to Japan."

* According to Japanese Immigration Law, "Temporary Visitor" entry status allows for a 15 or 90 day "sight-seeing, etc." stay. The visitor entering Japan who applies for 'sight-seeing stay' will have a "Temporary Visitor" stamp applied to their passport and only such a passport allows for the purchase and use of JR EAST PASS.
 Prices & Validity Period

Two types of JR EAST PASS exist: 'Green' (for First Class Green cars) and 'Coach', available for a 5 or a 10 day period, or a flexible 4-day Pass.

5-day and 10-day Pass:
A 5-day or 10-day Pass is valid for either 5 or 10 consecutive days beginning on the date of issue.
Flexible 4-day Pass:
A flexible 4-day Pass is valid on 4 consecutive or non-consecutive days within one month of the date of issue. (The date on which the Pass is used will be stamped aboard trains or station ticket gate.)

Many JR EAST trains include Green cars (First Class) and all include coach cars; with a Green-type Pass all cars are accessible while a Coach-type car is used only on coach cars.

* The above prices are in Japanese Yen for a JR EAST PASS Exchange Order (from January 1998); the actual cost is calculated on the date the Exchange Order is issued. Prices are subject to change without prior notice. The applicable price is as on the date an Exchange Order is issued. (Age validity is as at the time an Exchange Order is issued).
 How to obtain JR EAST PASS

  • Purchased outside Japan

  • 1. An Exchange Order can be purchased before leaving for Japan from travel agents with the GDS (Global Distribution Systems).
    2. Your Exchange Order needs to be exchanged for a JR EAST PASS after arrival in Japan.
    3. The exchange needs to be completed within 3 months from the issue date of the Exchange Order.
  • Purchased inside Japan

  • To qualify, buyer must produce valid passport* and return air ticket.

    The above conditions must be met or JR EAST PASS exchange /purchase cannot be successfully completed.
    (* Purchaser passport must bear "temporary Visitor" entry status stamp. Refer to JR EAST PASS -eligibility requirements.)
     Seat Reservation

    A ticket may be reserved at a Travel Service Center (View Plaza) or reservation office ('midori-no-madoguchi') at any JR EAST station. Produce your JR EAST PASS and obtain reserved-seat ticket prior to boarding.
