Ehime Prefecture, located in northwest Shikoku Island, is nature-blessed with a long, scenic coast line skirting numerous charming islands.

| Shimanami Sea Route |
10 spectacular bridges link Onomichi City
(Hiroshima Prefecture) and Imabari City
(Ehime Prefecture) using 6 islands as giant
stepping stones. Each with its own
uniqueness, Mukaishima, Innoshima,
Ikuchijima, Omishima, Hakatajima and
Oshima islands offer the avid traveler fresh
seafood, tasty fruits, local crafts and
historic cultural sites. Moreover, since May
1999, a grand adventure awaits the
energetic sporting and touring enthusiast
with the completion of an
80 km long cycling and
hiking trail. The route
follows the contours of
scenic Seto Inland Sea with
convenient bike rentals
(12) available on each island providing a
sporting challenge for expert, novice
cyclist and anyone in-between.

A source of great
pride in Japan, Tatara
Ohashi Bridge is the
longest, suspension
(cable-stayed) bridge
in the world. A
peculiar 'audio' phenomenon occurs when
hands are clapped on the bridge - curiously,
the echo mimics the famed 'Nakiryu' bell of
distant Toshogu Temple.

Oyamazumi Shrine's Shinto god, protector of
mountain and sea, dwells surrounded by a
splendid stand of 2600 years-old camphor trees
designated Natural Treasures. An impressive
museum displays body armor and martial
artifacts also National
Treasures and
Important Cultural
Properties.

Astride Katsuyama Hill, in splendid majesty
sits lofty Matsuyama Castle, a massive
fortification combined with graceful design.
Although often ravaged in war, the ancient
landmark completed (1627) by the great
samurai Yoshiaki
Katoh, is now
restored to former
glory. Climb the
tower for a
breath-taking
panoramic view. |
Visitors enjoy a
comfortable aura of
nostalgia in Uchiko,
reputed for
beautifully
preserving traditional houses along a
stretch of ancient cobble-stones. It boasts a
multi-purpose, traditionally constructed
Kabuki Theatre, and maintains a cherished
cultural heritage. Watered by the
Oda-gawa River in central Ehime, this fine
town warrants a leisurely visit.

'Dogo Onsen' (hot spring) is an
astounding 3,000
years old! Resembling a 3-tiered wooden
castle it became the first public bath
designated an Important Culture Asset.

Soseki Natsume, a
celebrated author here
penned "Botchan" a
classic novel.

Shikoku Island is

ceramics and Tobe
potters are
renowned for creating gorgeous,
translucent, indigo-blue patterns on thick
white porcelain; equally an artistic
expression as it is prized as sturdy,
