MASHIKO
Pottery studios in a mountain village
Tourists flock to the hills of Mashiko to visit galleries, museums and some 380 pottery studios and kilns producing world-renowned Mashiko-ware.
  MASHIKO CERAMIC ART MUSEUM
Mashiko Warenoborigawa klins Mashiko museum displays craftwork for daily use collected world-wide by Shoji Hamada. The 'noborigama' kilns in this museum were created by Shoji in 1930 popularizing Mashiko-ware, articles of daily use, as pieces of art. The late master potter, Shoji Hamada's global artwork collection is exhibited as are his thatched home, workshop and kiln used during his lifetime.
ASHIKAGA
Rich in cultural tradition
So beautiful it's known as 'little Kyoto' there's a vast cultural heritage found in Ashikaga including the nation's oldest school.
  ASHIKAGA SCHOOL
Kinugawa Hot Springs Ashikaga School is considered the oldest university in Japan, although not absolutely certain it is thought to have first been established as a family school by the Second Ashikaga Shogun Yoshikane. This outstanding medieval educational institution earned recognition as far as Europe when missionary Francisco Xavier praised it as Japan's largest and most famous university in the Kanto Region.

UTSUNOMIYA
Utsunomiya City, historic and bustling Tochigi Prefecture capital.
Utsunomiya, where visitors can feast on delicious 'gyoza' and visit glorious ancient sites is also the seat of Tochigi's government.
  OHYAJI TEMPLE
Ohyaji temple Ohyaji Temple, a lived-in dwelling in ancient times was, in 810, converted into a unique, peaceful place of worship by Buddhist Priest Kobo. Ohya Kannon is a 4-meter high Senju Kannon (multi-armed goddess) carved into a rock face; it is recognized as Japan's most ancient image of the Buddha.
  HEIWA KANNON (GODDESS OF PEACE)
Heiwa Kannnon To promote world peace, a majestic 27-meter high Kannon was carved into a wall of Ohya Stone. Above and over the statue's shoulder a panoramic view of Ohya Town is worth any visitor's climbing effort.
