NIKKO World Heritage Site
A historic, beautiful city with world heritage sites!
Historically significant and rich in culture, Nikko City, an international tourist destination is the pride of Tochigi Prefecture. Two shrines and one temple are designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. Lake Chuzenji, Senjogahara, hot springs and other scenic sites dramatically change their allure with each passing seasons.

TOSHOGU SHRINE |

Constructed as Ieyasu Tokugawa's mausoleum in 1617, the structure was later rebuilt into today's impressive shrine under the reign of the Third Shogun Iemitsu. All existing structures have been designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Assets and in 1999, the Toshogu Shrine and other shrines and temples in Nikko were officially celebrated as a World Heritage Site. Yomeimon, one of its gates, is also called 'Higurashimon' (twilight gate), as spectators never tire admiring its beauty from dawn till twilight. Visitors are also overwhelmed by some 5,000 ornate woodcarvings, including the popular 'Nemuri Neko' (Sleeping Cat) and 'San Zaru' (Three Monkeys), which represent the apex of the supreme craftsmanship thriving during the Edo Period. |

RINNOJI TEMPLE |

Rinnoji, an off-shoot of Shihonryuji Temple established by the founder of Nikko mountain worship, Priest Shodo, prospered drawing numerous devotees for religious training. In 1999, Rinnoji with other temples and shrines in Nikko, including Toshogu and Futaarasan shrines, were conferred World Heritage Site status. 'Sambutsudo' (Hall of Three Buddhas), the Shoyouen garden, the Houmotsuden with 30,000 art treasures and the Taiyuin Mausoleum demand much more than one day's visit.

SHINKYO |
 |
'Shinkyo' (Sacred Bridge) is a distinctive, vermillion lacquered bridge to the Nikko Tosho-gu across the Daiya River. One of the nation's oldest it was called 'Yamasuge-no-jabashi' (Snake Bridge with a Hedge) since the Nara Period of the late 8th Century. It features a unique infrastructure with large wood supports embedded into the earth or stone foundation on either shore.

KEGON FALLS |

Kegon Falls, is deemed one of the three most beautiful waterfalls in all of Japan. Plummeting nearly 100 meters it's at once visually forceful yet exquisitely elegant. An elevator whisks visitors to the gorge's base for a splendid sight any time of the year, but Kegon Falls is particularly dazzling in autumnal colors or decked in sparkling winter icicles.

LAKE CHUZENJI |

Located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,250 meters it's one of the most loved lakes in Japan. Lava flow from Mt. Nantai dammed the Daiyagawa River, eventually forming Lake Chuzenji. One of the most transparent lakes in the country, colorful seasonal changes beautifully reflects on its tranquil surface. The outflow results in the splendid Kegon Falls.

ANCIENT JAPANESE WOODED ROADWAY IN NIKKO |

The only site in Japan designated Special Historic Relics and a Special Natural Monument, almost four centuries old, 13,300 Japanese 'sugi' (cedar tree) were planted the full length of Nikko Sugi Avenue.
A truly impressive 37 kilometres long, this splendid wooded roadway is recognized by the Guiness Book of Records as the longest such thoroughfare in the world.

HEIKE VILLAGE |

Heike Village was constructed in 1985 to commemorate the 800 year anniversary of the Tairas' defeat at the hand of the rival Minamotos. Private homes from the village were relocated to reproduce and preserve the lifestyle of the fugitive Heike Clan for the benefit of future generations. Utensils, tools, bits and pieces reflecting daily life are on display.

Hot spring devotees discover distinctive exclusivity and comfort in three 'onsen' areas. Fleeing Heike warriors discovered Yunishikawa 800 years ago; the area features traditional thatched roof buildings and inns with a home-like ambiance. ASHIO COPPER MINE TOUR |

Visually awesome, the biggest mine tour in Japan helps visitors discover the past history of the famed Ashio Copper Mine producing copper 400 years until 1973. The mine galleries are an impressive 1,200 kilometers with a 700-meter section open to the public brought down via mining cart 300 metres deep. Authentic operation scenes are recreated using real-size mannequins.
