Adachi Museum of Art
Harmony and Beauty of Japanese Paintings and Celebrated Gardens.
Magnificently set in a natural environment, Adachi Museum of Art is renowned for superb Japanese gardens and its collection of contemporary Japanese paintings. Focusing on the works of the great master, Taikan Yokoyama, it houses some 1,300 of the country's most highly regarded paintings produced following the Meiji Period. The brilliantly designed Japanese gardens are the masterpieces of Zenko Adachi, the museum's founder who criss-crossed Japan, carefully choosing pine trees and rocks for the landscape gardens while putting heart and soul into their creation. The dry landscape garden is the main feature of the museum's huge 43,000 square-meter grounds along with a moss garden, a pond garden and a white-gravel and pine garden. For a fifth consecutive year, a popular American publication, 'Journal of Japanese Gardens', has ranked Adachi's immaculately maintained Japanese-style garden number one, chosen over seven hundred gardens across the country. Each step taken, each view of a graceful pattern becomes a peaceful journey in accordance with the calming spirit of Japanese paintings. Enjoy the harmony of nature as beautiful art with each passing season.

Matsue
At the heart of the Sanin region, Matsue is surrounded by natural beauty and broad cultural and historical significance from ancient times to modern days.
Matsue Castle Town District
Matsue CastleMatsueStanding in the inner enclosure of Matsue Castle Park, the castle was constructed over a five year period and completed in 1611 under the feudal Lord Yoshiharu Horio, founder of Matsue City. The contrast of black panels and white walls at first glance appears simple and sturdy while yet retaining an elegant appearance; it's also known as Chidori Castle. Shirominawate Street, running alongside the castle's northern approach, is known as a collection of places of interest, such as well-preserved ancient residences for middle-ranking 'samurai' families almost three centuries old.
Yakumo Koizumi (Lafcadio Hearn)
Lafcadio Hearn's memorial museumLafcadio HearnLafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) also known as Yakumo Koizumi after gaining Japanese citizenship, became celebrated in the West for his books about Japan, among others, 'Miminashi-Hoichi' (Hoichi the Earless) and 'Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan'. Hearn's former residence and memorial museum are adjacent to each other where his most treasured implements such as his writing desk, manuscripts and tobacco pipe are on display. Undoubtedly, the cultural and historical significance of Matsue City figured greatly in Hearn's images of Japan, providing insight and influence upon his writings.
