| Atami Onsen |
Host to three million guests annually, it's one of the largest spa areas of Japan and the biggest in Izu Peninsula; close to Tokyo, it's very convenient for foreign visitors to access. The hot springs thought to be discovered during the 8th century were finally developed as a health resort at the close of the 19th century.
Atami Onsen village consists of six spas: 'Yugawara', 'Izusan', 'Atami', 'Taga', 'Ajiro' and 'Hatsushima'.
Izu-Yugawara
Although popular with visitors, Izu-Yugawara is a quiet haven nestled within the natural beauty of Hakone Mountains and Sagami Bay. Rich in history and tradition, it reflects a cherished bygone era, a fact attested to by the numerous writers who have favored this town. Relaxation and soothing relief from a variety of ailments is dispensed through the healing power of the spring waters.
Izusan Onsen
Once inaccessible to the general populace (about 800 years ago it was exclusively reserved for the Shugen-do Buddhism sect), Izusan Onsen became public some 650 years ago. The water described as "well-honed", makes bathing in this clear and odor-free water truly enjoyable.
Atami Onsen
Atami Onsen was discovered over 12 centuries ago. It's recorded the great General Ieyasu Tokugawa was a grateful user of the waters and it's also known that large quantities of the mineral water were shipped to historic Edo Castle in Tokyo. Some 400 hotels, traditional or modern, numerous souve-nir shops spread across the city from beach to mountain slope, the city boasts of resplendent night views.
Taga Onsen
Located by a peaceful sea, Tage Onsen, emanates scents of a working fishing village along with the hospitable warmth of the inhab-itants. The visitor is well-advised to sample the local seafood as well as one of the local baths.
Ajiro Onsen
Once a fishing village, Ajiro Onsen hot springs was only recently discovered this past century. Ocean fronting 'Himono Ginza' street features 30 shops offering dried sea food products; horse mackerel is the most abundant catch in the area.
Hatsushima Onsen
Located on the adjacent island bearing the same name, Hatsushima Onsen is 25 minutes by ferry from Atami City port. Water sports, scuba-diving, snorkeling, ocean fishing are popular with visitors who might also enjoy the charm of a 'Minshiku', a Japanese-style B & B that tables succulent seafood on the menu.

The admirable Japanese-style garden, Akao Herb and Rose Garden is fully 60 hectares overlook-ing Sagami Bay. Admire the magnifi-cent, ancient red pine 'bonsai' over 600 years old, a herb display with an amazing 30,000 plants of 1,500 different species and a rose garden with a mind-boggling 2,000 bushes of 100 different type and a children's plaza.

| Atami Sea Fireworks Festival |
Hot Spring visitors can enjoy 5,000 fireworks bursting in an awesome display of pyrotechnic celebration along Atami Beach. Featured "Midair Niagara" is a 'Starmine' (non-stop shots) launched the length of the site to turn night into day with vivid, silver sparkles. Hemmed in on three sides by steep mountains, Atami Bay is ideal for fireworks. Reverberating, explosive bursts cause a powerful vibrating sensation in the onlooker's body especially when close by, as from the beach at 'Shinsui Park'. Be thrilled, not only visually but physically too!

'Atami Age' is a 100 percent fish cake that deep fried is really tasty eaten plain or even re-heated later. 'Atami no Kusuri-yu' is a bath powder for home use that meets the approval of local doctors and pharmacists. It is concocted with an assortment of special herbs and is deemed effective for nerve pain, lower back problems, chilblain and other ailments. It's wonderful while relaxing inhaling the waft of a pleasant herbal incense. The plum flower is the emblem of Atami City and two fragrances, 'red plum' and 'white plum' are available. These fine products are unique souvenirs from City of Atami.
