This designated national treasure preservation area displays thatched-roof houses originally built over 200 years ago. Replacement of a thatched roof is required every 15 years with the complicated process undertaken by several professional artisans and it can take as much as three months. In contrast to Takayama's 'Shirakawago' that is cast as being 'male', Miyama's thatched roof design is designated as attractively 'female'.

A bucolic village nestled between mountains and the limpid waters of the Yura River. Bus service is available from Kyoto Station to Miyama. Following the Kiyotaki River, the traveler can view and appreciate the straight and handsome 'Kitayama' cedars reaching for the sky. Durable yet beautiful, the wood is prized for building historical structures such as the Imperial Palace.
