Kayabuki no sato(thatched roof) This designated national treasure preservation area displays thatched-roof houses originally built over 200 years ago. Replacement of a thatched roof is required every 15 years with the complicated process undertaken by several professional artisans and it can take as much as three months. In contrast to Takayama's 'Shirakawago' that is cast as being 'male', Miyama's thatched roof design is designated as attractively 'female'. Replacement process

Kayabuki Art Museum A folklore museum featuring paintings and historical documents, farm tools and articles in a farmer's daily life. (Open: April to November) Miyama nature and culture village A bucolic village nestled between mountains and the limpid waters of the Yura River. 'Kajikaso', a pleasant accommodation facility, offers various cultural hands-on experiences such as bamboo craftwork and soba (buckwheat noodle) making. Ashu Natural ForestKitayama cedars
Ashu Natural Forest One of Japan's few primary forests retained for the purpose of academic research. Several hundred year old mighty 'Ashu' cedar trees abound in the natural setting of a vast 2,000 hectares area. Kitayama Cedars Bus service is available from Kyoto Station to Miyama. Following the Kiyotaki River, the traveler can view and appreciate the straight and handsome 'Kitayama' cedars reaching for the sky.
